Understanding Your Centre

Centres vary considerably in terms of size, location, opening hours etc, but there are a few basic principles which should be present none the less:

  • The entrance must be clear, accessible and secure
  • Wherever your location is, you will no doubt have to compete with other shop units, local buildings, or offices. Clearly signing the building will ensure that you don’t go unnoticed. It will also avoid any confusion for first time visitors, and those with visual impairments.
  • Ensure access to and from the centre is straightforward. Install automatic doors where possible. Where required, ramps should be installed to accommodate wheel chair learners and prams.
  • A cost effective way of ensuring the centre is clearly visible at eye level is to apply vinyl graphics. They are available in full colour and can be sourced from any local signage company.
  • It may be possible to install double sets of doors, which allows you to have the exterior doors left open. This can be more inviting to passers by than encountering a closed door.
  • It's also good practice to display your opening hours, as you may have specific opening times as a result of your property or lease agreement.
